Google: The power of +1

google_plus

I recently wrote a post about Google entering the social networking world a little, well. late. I stick by that statement and believe that they should have been doing social for the past 5 years at least. What many people have underestimated however is the power of their +1 button. Let me explain some of the benefits to Google:

1. It’s integrated with search
+1 is built right into the worlds most popular search engine, you can choose to +1 something straight from the search results page, a sharing option that is not available for any of the other social networks.

2. It improves your search ranking
There is no doubt that Google has some of the best SEO algorithms in the search space, it’s that, that made them so popular in their early years. What has been missing however is the social element. Bing, historically has performed better for Social related search but now +1 has added a Social layer to Google’s ability to rank pages. This is so powerful as a page that is +1’d has been ‘approved’ as good content by actual people rather than just bots.

3. It’s Social
People in your Google+ Circles will see your profile picture right underneath the search result you have +1’d. This gives the search more credibility and therefore more chance or more click-throughs. My Circles will see my profile picture below this post for example

4. It Bookmark’s
I am terrible for remembering to bookmark useful sites. Google+ automatically stores a list of the content you have +1’d within a tab on your Google profile. Perfect for keeping track of useful content without having to create specific bookmarks.

So there we have it, 4 good reasons for using Google+ and a snapshot of how important it will be for both personal users and businesses moving forward.

  5. Thanks for sharing this article, Gareth. I was hesitant about adding another social media devices to my plan, but Google+ sounds like it’s worth the effort. I agree they surprisingly waited far too long to get in the game, but I’m sure they’ll eventually be the one to beat.
