Would you pay for Social Media Consultancy?

Gareth Case Social ConsultancyI get a lot of cold calls. Everything from data, web agencies, telemarketing firms and so on. But recently I have noticed an increase in companies pitching ‘consultancy’. The most popular form at the moment being Social Media Consultancy.

So I pose a question, how many of you would be happy to pay for Social Media Consultancy and out of those that are, how much would you pay and what would you expect?

For me it’s a tricky one. It must only really apply to type 1 marketing managers as type 2’s will typically be experimenting on the job. I have spent the past 2 years spending quite a bit if time on learning the tricks of the trade and how I can leverage the best return from Social Media. Is the social channel something that you don’t have the time to take on and would like someone to guide you on?

  1. I would say no, not until you’ve tried to see what you can achieve on your own first. I always think it’s quite sad when Marketing Managers outsource support like this from the offset.

    At the very least Marketing professionals should be taking an interest in understanding it for themselves. Just like any other discipline within the marketing mix a Marketer needs to grasp the basics and be able to sympathise with the work, skill base and processes of an activity, be it social media, PR or even graphic design.

    I’m not saying that we should all be or even can be “guru’s” of everything marketing- that’s a different discussion altogether (If you are interested I have a ranty blog post on the subject here: http://jojagiello.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/cowboys/ ) . I am however saying that Marketers need to grasp the basic concepts of other fields and visa versa.

    Social media is a particularly interesting field when it comes to out sourcing services. If you know nothing about it how do you know you’d be getting value for money from a consultancy? Most likely you won’t be…Social media and especially ongoing content generation and management is always far better when done in house, making it more timely, informed, accurate and relevant.

  3. Hi Gareth,

    An interesting question, I guess enough people must be willing to pay for SM consultancy to make it worth the cold callers’ while to pester you!

    I can sonly speak from my own experience on this, but I found that running a web development agency, more and more clients were asking us about SM and what they should be doing with it. I realised we had to get serious about SM ourselves, and for this we got in a social media expert who was actually very good and got us up to speed with minimum fuss.

    What I did find however is that there is a limited life-span in terms of relevance for such consultancy. Once I and my team were familiar with the tools and techniques of SM, we found we had little need for more help, as we know our subject matter and contacts best. I guess you would liken it to not needing someone to show you how to use your TV remote, once you’ve been shown the ropes.

    On a larger scale , I think the shelf life of the industry is similarly limited; young grads we recruit come with the skills ‘baked in’ – they are contantly pointing out new platforms and trends to me, which is always pleasing. Increasingly, I see the ‘discipline’ being absorbed into the general marketing/comms function, but am happy to hear counter arguments…
